American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana
The ACLU is a non-profit, nonpartisan public interest organization devoted exclusively to protecting basic civil liberties of all Americans as they are embodied in the U.S. and state constitutions. Also, the ACLU defends certain protected groups from discrimination as embodied in laws enacted by Congress or state legislatures. The ACLU does not choose clients on the basis of membership status and/or financial consideration. Complaints appropriate to the ACLU generally deal with: First Amendment rights, Equal Protection of the Law, Due Process of Law, and the Right to Privacy. Violation of one's civil rights must generally involve a government office or agency that has infringed upon a person's privacy, religion or speech. We may consider cases involving discrimination on the basis of such things as a person's race, gender or sexual orientation. We normally only litigate those cases involving fundamental rights as listed above and "high impact" cases which present new legal issues and affect large numbers of people. |
