Zip code and county
Enter the zip code or county of the person who needs help. It is better to enter the zip code because many groups do not serve all of a certain county. If you search by county, check the full description of each organization for the specific zip codes it serves.

Type of help

There are several different ways in which an organization can provide help:

  • Full Representation - by a lawyer or a legal advocate in court or at a hearing at a government agency.
  • Brief Advice - in person or over the telephone.
  • Legal Clinic - where you can briefly talk to an attorney about your legal proble.
  • Pro Se Clinics - where you are shown how you can "help yourself" with a particular legal problem
  • Self-Help - educational materials such as factsheets and brochures
  • Other - workshops, referrals to private attorneys, and other services.

Note: Not all organizations provide all the services listed.

Income guidelines

Some organizations cannot serve people with incomes higher than their guidelines.  Income guidelines use either a percentage of the federal poverty income amount (example: $18,000/year).  LawHelp.org/SC does not guarantee assistance from an organization even if you meet its income guidelines.

Many legal services groups use the chart below to decide who can receive help.  The chart shows you how much you have to earn to be at 125% or 200% of what the Federal government considers to be the poverty level.  "Family Size" is the total number of people in the household.

Percentages of the Federal Poverty Level

Family Size 125%(1) 200%(2)
1 $12,763 $20,420
2 $17,113 $27,380
3 $21,463 $34,340
4 $25,813 $41,300
5 $30,163 $48,260
6 $34,513 $55,220
7 $38,863 $62,180
8 $43,213 $69,140

(1) For families of more than 8 people, add $4,350 for each additional family member.
(2) For families of more than 8 people, add $6,960 for each additional family member.

Can I get help if my income is larger than the guidelines?

Some organizations may make exceptions for seniors, people who are HIV positive, or people experiencing domestic violence.

Some organizations also take into account expenses such as childcare, medical bills and debts.
